Perceptions of Usefulness on a Robotic Recycling Bin
This study explores whether empathy towards an interactive trash bin, induced by its anthropomorphic appearance and behavior, affects people's evaluations and their intention to use it for recycling. An online survey with 344 participants showed a video of a person interacting with the bin in three conditions. We measured perceptions of the bin's anthropomorphism and animacy, empathy towards and enjoyment of the bin, and intentions to use it. Results suggest that higher anthropomorphism led to greater empathy, which directly influenced intentions to use the bin.
